So much publicity in the news about Mexico being dangerous for travelers conjures up images of banditos and horrible things happening to visitors. I've been here for 10 years and have yet to see the inside of a Mexican jail or fallen victim to a bandito.
My husband and I feel that if we want to get robbed or murdered, we should go to San Diego or Los Angeles or Chicago......there's so much bad stuff happening in those cities on a daily basis that the public has become insensitive to it. Here in Rosarito, crime is minor....you take steps to protect your home and you don't get robbed.
Here, we know that if the gangs come into town from LA, they are thrown in jail....so there's no problems.....they think twice about misbehaving when they see what the jails are like. Mexico has laws and it is of utmost importance that these laws are obeyed since you are guilty until proven innocent, whether a Mexican citizen or not.
The following are listed as against the law: Disturbing the peace or being a public nuisance; Drinking in public; fighting; Nudity or immoral conduct; Use, production or sale of false documents, Possession, introduction or use of any weapon; Possession, introduction or consumption of restricted drugs. (same as in the States); Drunk driving or being under the influence of drugs; causing an auto accident or injuring someone.
If you are arrested, call the Tourist Assistance Hotline 078 and ask them to contact the US
Consulate who will help you with a list of attorneys, contact your family and get you clothes or food. They can't get you out of jail. If you break a law, you pay the price of your actions, so be careful![:'(]
